RADIATION DANGERS
Why do I need Potassium Iodide?
One of the most feared consequences of a nuclear reactor accident or nuclear bomb is the release of a radioactive iodine plume into the environment. Radioactive Iodine (I-131) is a by-product of nuclear fission which occurs only within a nuclear reactor or during detonation of a nuclear bomb. What makes radioactive iodine so dangerous is that the body cannot distinguish it from ordinary iodine. As a result, if swallowed (in contaminated food or water), or inhaled (it can remain in the atmosphere for days), it will be absorbed into the thyroid gland (only the thyroid absorbs iodine) and may lead to thyroid cancer, especially in children.

Do I need a prescription?
Because of the inherent safety of Potassium Iodide that is WHO Approved, it is available without a prescription for radiation protection. Its use, however, should be limited to radiation emergencies and only when recommended by emergency response authorities.

ARE YOU PREPARED?

How and When to Take Potassium Iodide

Potassium iodide should be taken as soon as possible after public health officials tell you.

Adults should take one dose of 130mg every 24 hours. More will not help you because the thyroid can "hold" only limited amounts of iodine. Larger doses will increase the risk of side effects. Please consult your doctor before taking the drug for more than 10 days or before administering to children.

Why should I take Potassium Iodide?

Japan's nuclear plants are spilling highly radioactive material into the environment right now. No one can clearly predict the out come of the fall out.

While it is speculated that by the time the radio active cloud hits the eastern United States it will be below levels of serious concern, no one can say for sure to what level the exposure will be.

In addition, the USA has 104 nuclear power reactors in 31 states, operated by 30 different power companies. Fault lines are scattered around the United States. The Earth is going through a time of powerful earthquakes.

No one can predict where the next earthquake will hit or what damage it will cause.
